Kokeshi dolls are made from wood. The wood is dried naturally before being shaped with simple tools. The finished shape is then polished with rice plant or ‘Tokusa', a type of grass. The vibrant Kokeshi colours are achieved using Indian ink, carefully applied by hand. The final stage is a smooth application of fine wax, giving each doll its soft glow.

As the Kokeshi dolls are hand painted, no two faces are alike. Each doll is in its own way, unique - possibly the greatest charm of Kokeshi. Some dolls are whimsical, happy and smiling, while others are serious. Hananokaori is the perfect addition to any collection.
